Commentary on the text “Tirumantiram,” Tantra Three
Teachings of the Siddha Tirumular:
12. The Unshakable Kala
712. Yoga Leads to the Divine Nectar.
The Lord of the eye in the forehead,
Who shows the path
Of Divine Love;
Seek Him with ardent love.
The Ganga within the skull will flow gracefully,
And in boundless love He will be your salvation.
The language of Tirumular, like that of all Tamil Siddhas, is highly poetic and metaphorical. Tantrism in general is characterized by the metaphorical language of sandhya-bhashya. If you are not very knowledgeable, you may think that this is merely intricate poetry, but Tirumular sets forth the truth very clearly and precisely.
When he says that yoga leads to the divine nectar, he means the wine of immortality, amrita-varuni—the nectar that arises when prana enters the soft palate, the tala chakra, soma chakra, lalana chakra, and bindu visarga. This nectar descends because prana enters the central channel. The Ganga that begins to flow within the skull is the nectar that starts streaming downward and irrigating the body. The nectar is the yogi’s reward for his yogic labors. Only after impeccable years of practice filled with discipline, meditation, and purification of the channels does a yogi earn the right to drink such nectar. We have some monks who enjoy drinking this nectar thanks to their success in practice. Some are progressing toward drinking this nectar. You should ask for guidance from those who have already had these experiences and learn from them.
The nectar arises in a purified body in which kundalini has been awakened and raised through the six centers to the head. This is possible only when the central channel is open.
