From September 14 to 21, an eight-day online seminar will be held on the foundations of the spiritual path in the Siddha Advaita tradition. The sessions are intended for those who wish to gain a systematic understanding of the principles of discipleship, spiritual discipline, and life within the tradition.
Advaita affirms the unity of the supreme reality—Brahman—and the innermost nature of the human being, Atman. This principle is expressed in the Chandogya Upanishad by the formula tat tvam asi—“You are That” (VI.8.7), and in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad by the saying aham brahmāsmi, “I am Brahman” (I.4.10).
However, in the classical tradition, knowledge of non-duality is not reduced to an abstract philosophical assertion. It is revealed through sādhanā—spiritual practice, receiving the teacher’s instructions, moral discipline, service, and contemplation.
The Mundaka Upanishad instructs the seeker to approach a teacher:
“To comprehend this, let him approach a teacher, with sacrificial fuel in hand, who is versed in Scripture and established in Brahman.”
Mundaka Upanishad, I.2.12
Seminar Topics
Over the course of eight days, the following topics will be examined in sequence:
śraddhā—faith, trust in the teaching, and conscious acceptance of the spiritual path;
adherence to the tradition and the significance of paramparā—the lineage through which knowledge is transmitted;
the qualities of a disciple and the requirements of spiritual discipline;
samaya—sacred commitments and rules that preserve the integrity of the practice;
sevā—selfless service to the teacher, the sangha, and the Dharma;
pūjā—traditional worship and its place in daily sadhana;
the relationship between Guru and disciple;
the practitioner’s responsibility for preserving the instructions received.
In the Bhagavad Gita, the path to attaining spiritual knowledge is described as follows:
“Learn this through respectful approach, inquiry, and service. The sages who have seen the truth will instruct you in knowledge.”
Bhagavad Gita, IV.34
Seminar Presenters
The lectures will be given by novices affiliated with the ashram:
Nalakini;
Adilokanatha;
Trilochana;
Vibhuti;
Yogeshwari;
Ishvarachandra;
Vishvananda;
Shrimati.
All presenters are disciples of Swami Vishnudevananda Giri Maharaj and have many years of experience in spiritual practice and following the established way of life of the tradition.
Significance of the Seminar
Entering a spiritual tradition begins not with accepting abstract ideas, but with a clear understanding of its foundations. A seeker needs to know how teaching and practice, freedom and discipline, personal aspiration and the Guru’s guidance relate to one another.
The seminar is intended to provide participants with a structured understanding of these principles and to explain the traditional meaning of concepts that are often used without the necessary context. A systematic study of the foundations helps distinguish authentic spiritual discipline from arbitrary interpretation and fosters a responsible attitude toward the chosen path.
