The training system consists of 12 courses. Completing one course takes an average of one year, but it may take less or more time—there are no time limits. You can study independently or in an online group with an instructor.
Theory
The theoretical component includes about 250 questions per course, divided into 24 weeks of study. The questions are provided electronically and organized by week. Additional materials may be included with the questions. After every four weeks of studying the material, an online assessment interview is held. Thus, there are six assessments over the entire course.
Practice
The course includes practical assignments in various types of yoga: mastering yoga sequences, breathing exercises, mantra yoga, meditation, studying ritual practices, etc. Each practice has its own requirements, a self-managed tracking system, and a progress scale.
Retreats
Each course includes scheduled retreats—periods of practice in seclusion. The list of retreats is available in your personal account. The first course includes five retreats: four three-day retreats and one seven-day retreat. Completion of the retreats is confirmed by a monk.
Retreats are held at an ashram or Dharma Center under the guidance of a monk or authorized instructor.
Two three-day retreats may be completed online in accordance with the annual online retreat schedule.
Service
Service (karma yoga) is an important practice aimed at developing the qualities of selflessness and dedication. The required period of service starts at one week and increases in duration with each course. Service is performed at one of the ashrams or in another manner agreed upon with a monk.
Study Texts
In addition to mastering the core curriculum, each course includes a reading list for independent study, divided into required and recommended reading (three to five books on each list).
Writing a Treatise
As part of each course, you must submit one written treatise on a selected topic. It must be at least 20 pages long (the required length increases with each course). The treatise is uploaded to your personal account.
At the end of each course, in your personal account on the Institute’s website, you independently assess the qualities you have acquired and developed during your studies. Once you have completed all the course requirements, you register for a final interview, during which senior monks provide recommendations and guidance on your studies and practice so that all these qualities may fully blossom.
