How the transmission from Guru to Disciple works

In the modern world, we are accustomed to the idea that learning is a process of accumulating information. We read books, watch lectures, and increase our intellectual baggage. However, in the spiritual tradition of Sanatana Dharma, the transmission of knowledge is structured quite differently. It is not merely the communication of new facts, but a sacred act in which the living power of the lineage flows from heart to heart.

    Method as a Living Presence

Many wonder: why can't one simply read a sacred text and achieve enlightenment on their own? The answer lies in the very nature of the spiritual method. According to the teachings, a true method is not a dry instruction, but bhava (a spiritual state), the very spirit of universal power.

“The method is the very spirit of universal power that has entered the body of the disciple, the manifestation of the Supreme Source itself.”

Imagine an unlit candle. It has a wick and wax; it possesses the potential to give light, but it does not burn by itself. It needs the touch of an already burning flame. It is the same with spiritual practice: it only "comes alive" when received from someone who has themselves become one with that knowledge.

A true Master is the embodied body of their method. When they transmit it to a disciple, they transmit not words, but the very spark of life.

    Diksha

Technically, this process is often formalized through diksha (initiation). A deep meaning is hidden within this word. The root "Da" means "to give"—it is the gift of divine knowledge. The root "Kshi" means "to destroy"—it is the destruction of ignorance and the limitations of consciousness.

Diksha (initiation) is not a formal ritual of joining an organization. It is a fundamental change in a person's status within the universe. At that moment, "contact with the Divine" is officially recognized on the subtle plane. This can be compared to a second birth. The disciple receives a spiritual name and a mantra (a sacred formula), which becomes their personal key to higher states of consciousness.

At a deeper level, there is samskara-diksha (purification of karmic imprints). It literally "cuts off" the disciple from the burden of the past, burning accumulated negative tendencies in the fire of the Master's grace.

    As the Master explains:

“Diksha is an initiation ceremony during which the guru transmits spiritual knowledge to the disciple and helps clear the traces of their limitations in consciousness.”

    Changing the Karmic Vision

The most amazing aspect of transmission is the change in how we perceive reality. We all look at the world through the prism of our karma (past actions and habits), as if through dusty glasses.

Transmission from the Guru bestows a different karmic vision (perception of reality). Without this living connection, even the most flawless technique may remain merely an exercise. But when we are in a state of transmission, our perception begins to resonate with the consciousness of the Master. We begin to see the world not as a collection of problems, but as a play of divine energy.

“To work with transmission means to gradually enter a different karmic vision... Conversely, even if we flawlessly attempt to apply techniques but are not in a state of transmission, no other karmic vision arises.”

    Three Pillars of Successful Transmission

For this mystical process to take place, certain conditions are necessary. Transmission is always a two-way street.

  1.         Samaya (spiritual bond): This is the foundation of the relationship. Samaya (sacred commitment) is the invisible thread of sincerity and devotion connecting the disciple to the Teacher. If this bond is pure, grace flows unimpeded.

“Samaya is the sacred bond between teacher and disciple... If it has not arisen, calling oneself a disciple is premature.”

  1.         Shraddha (unwavering faith): Without trust, the mind remains closed. The disciple must become an "empty vessel," temporarily setting aside old concepts and doubts to accommodate something infinitely greater.
  2.   Resonance and Guru-yoga: This is the art of attunement. Just as a violinist becomes one with their violin, the disciple, through the practice of guru-yoga (the path of merging with the teacher), strives to "catch" the Master's internal frequency.

The disciple must become an "empty vessel," temporarily setting aside old concepts to accommodate something infinitely greater. When this happens, true mysticism begins: the disciple's attention merges with the Atman (the Higher Self) of the Guru, and in response, their own divine nature awakens.

    Shaktipat

Sometimes transmission happens instantaneously. This is called shaktipat (the descent of power) or anugraha (divine grace). In such moments, knowledge is transmitted not through lectures, but through a look, a gesture, or even silence.

Here, the Guru acts as a conduit through which universal energy operates. If the disciple's mind is subtle and open enough, they simply "receive" the flow of awareness, which instantly changes their internal landscape.

It is the principle of transmission that makes our path alive. Thanks to it, we connect to transpersonal sources of wisdom that lead us beyond the limits of the finite "self" into the great ocean of Consciousness.
