Atma-vichara is a direct and uncompromising investigation of oneself. Not the personality. Not the body. Not the mind. But of the one who is aware.
This is the practice of returning attention to its source. When attention turns inward, the mind, accustomed to wandering in the external, gradually loses its power — and dissolves into that from which it arose.
“As long as the inert and unintelligent mind follows the path of pleasures, this darkness of the apparent world does not vanish. But at the moment a person awakens and inquires into their own essence, the darkness dissolves.” Rishi Vashistha
In retreat, step by step, we separate the unreal from the Real: the body is not-I, energy is not-I, emotions are not-I, thoughts are not-I. As the practice progresses, the inner Witness is discovered — pure awareness, free from form, history, and identification. Thus, viveka is born — the ability to distinguish the Atman from everything that we are not.
This method, revealed to the world by Sri Ramana Maharshi, is considered the most direct path to spiritual Realization. From the very beginning, it implies a vision of the ultimate goal of human existence — unity with the Absolute, the higher “Self” (Atman). It requires no complex techniques, but it does require honesty. When the Truth is known, it is no longer lost. When the true “Self” is recognized, delusion vanishes forever.
“You must distinguish between the Self, pure in itself, and the ‘I’-thought. The latter, being merely a thought (vritti), sees subject and object, sleeps, wakes, eats and drinks, dies and is reborn. But the pure Self is pure Being, eternal existence, free from ignorance and thought-illusion. If you remain as that Self, your only being, without thought, then the ‘I’-thought will vanish, and delusion will vanish forever.” Sri Ramana Maharshi, “The Theory of Self-Inquiry”.
The retreat creates the conditions for a deepened practice of self-inquiry:
- a directed turning of attention inward;
- recognition of the Witness and the false “I”;
- steady abiding in awareness;
- the gradual dissolution of duality.
This is not a path to new states, but the recognition of oneself as the Atman.
