Moksha Dharma

Moksha-dharma (Sanskrit: mokṣa-dharma) is the path of Liberation; a spiritual discipline aimed at the ultimate cessation of the cycle of birth and death and the attainment of unity with the Absolute.

The term is composed of two roots: mokṣa — “liberation,” “release” (from the root muc — “to let go, to release”) and dharma — “law,” “path,” “that which sustains” (from the root dhṛ — “to hold”). Literally, it means “the law of liberation,” “the path leading to release.”

Distinction from Other Dharmas

In Sanatana Dharma, there are various kinds of dharma: varna-dharma (the duty of one’s social class), ashrama-dharma (the duty associated with one’s stage of life), and kama-dharma (the path of fulfilling desires). Everyone follows some form of dharma of their own—familial, social, or professional. Moksha-dharma stands apart: it does not serve the purposes of this world but is directed toward complete awakening from conditioned existence.

The greatness of moksha-dharma often goes unrecognized. People confuse it with other paths—with a pious life, ritual purity, or moral virtues. All of these are valuable, but they do not yet constitute moksha-dharma. Its distinguishing feature is aspiration toward moksha as the highest and sole goal.

The Essence of the Practice

Moksha-dharma is the release of God within oneself. It is not the creation of something new or the acquisition of something that was not there before, but the clearing away of that which obscures the originally pure nature of the Atman. God within us is inherently free and pure and requires neither correction nor effort. But our perception is conditioned by avidya—and it is precisely this perception that needs to be transformed.

The tradition of Advaita Vedanta identifies three foundations of this path: viveka (discernment between the real and the unreal), vairagya (detachment from the fruits of action), and mumukshutva (an irresistible longing for Liberation). Without these qualities, a person may engage in spiritual practice for years and still remain within the bounds of another dharma.

“The path of liberation is truly great. We often fail to recognize it and confuse it with other paths. Everyone pursues some small dharma of their own, but the path of liberation possesses its own greatness and surpasses other paths.”

Swami Vishnudevananda Giri, “Paths of Spiritual Evolution and the Grace of Shiva,” 2017
